The Paddle UK Core Coach Training focuses on the foundational principles of how to coach, helping instructors understand, enable, and structure learning for paddlers of all abilities. Whether candidates are taking it as a standalone course to refine their coaching practice or as part of the broader Paddle UK Coach Award pathway, this training bridges practical technique with effective teaching theories. 

Course Overview & Key Themes -

The Learner at the Centre: Understanding how different paddlers learn, identifying individual athlete/learner needs, and adapting delivery styles to create an engaging, supportive environment.

Session Design & Planning: How to structure progressive practice sessions, plan adaptable lessons, and construct drills, sequencing, and constraints to maximize time on the water.

Coach Decision-Making: Developing observational triggers, making conscious in-the-moment coaching decisions, and refining personal coaching philosophies.

Reflective Practice: Learning how to evaluate personal delivery, build a Personal Development Plan (PDP), and continuously improve coaching craft after the course.

Who It’s For: Open to paddlers across all disciplines (kayak, canoe, SUP, etc.) looking to develop their coaching skills.

Prerequisites: Candidates must be aged 18+ and hold full Home Nation Association (Paddle UK) membership. Independent paddling competence in their chosen craft on sheltered water is recommended.

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED: Personal paddling clothing and equipment as required, appropriate to spending a day on and in the water (Drysuit or Warm wetsuit), Buoyancy Aid, Helmet, Sturdy closed toe footwear ( NOT Crocs, sliders, flimsy beach shoes), Warm Layers, Spare warm layers.
